Maggies Bike & Hike 2009
For the second year, Galloway Group entered a team in the 73-mile Monster Bike & Hike endurance event in aid of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. Participants first cycled 30 miles and then choose to hike 8 (bronze), 25 (silver) or 43 (gold) miles – all non-stop and within 24 hours. They joined 700 participants at the event, which took place on Saturday 2nd through to Sunday 3rd May along the Great Glen Way, in the Highlands of Scotland. The team also had to overcome various weather challenges from blue skies to torrential rain and even sleet and snow in the early hours of the morning. Finally bringing home 4 Gold medals and 3 Silver. The first to reach Gold were Jim Burke and Andy Murdoch in 14 hours 45 mins followed by Donald Napier and Sandy Rae who arrived in Inverness at 4.40 am. Silver medal winners were Nicola Di Marco, Norah Grubb and Caroline Beecroft. Not forgetting the Support Team, Sammy Brown and Simon Di Marco who drove, fed and encouraged the team throughout the event. The team raised over £4,000 for Maggies Centres who offer support and advice to all those affected by cancer. They are there for anybody who feels the need for help, which includes those who love and look after someone with cancer, who often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those who actually have the disease.
