Day Out Cooking at Nick Nairn Cook School

On Friday 25th September
20 Members of Staff from Dundee headed off for a feast
of Scallops, Fillet of Beef and Chocolate cake courtesy
of Nick Nairn Cook School. But, before anyone could
sit down to enjoy the delicacies, they had to prepare
and cook it themselves.
Under the expert guidance of a top chef, the preparation
of the chocolate cake started the day. With a flurry
of whisking, creaming and beating some magnificent creations
appeared and were popped into the oven to rise (or fall).
The preparation of the
scallops was next. Some more adept than others at opening
the shell, some even surprised that there was a shell
at all!! With only minor injuries and a couple of blue
plasters the feast (and wine) began.

With fire extinguishers
on hand, the grand finale was the cooking of the flambéed
Fillet of Beef. A few singed eyebrows for those who
were rather generous with the whiskey but the results
were worth it.

Great day, great fun, great food.

Day Out White Water Rafting

On
Friday 28th August , 14 adventurous/insane staff members
took to the water for a day of fun on the beautiful, if
a little wet, River Tay. After several days of rain the
river was running high and fast … “Perfect” … or
so we were told.
The morning of Bugging
(individual inflatable chairs) had mixed success – one
or two even managed to stay on and I understand that
one ‘bug’ was last seen heading out towards
the North Sea!
The afternoon of rafting was thoroughly
enjoyed by everyone as the photos show. Several decided
to swim at one point. Well a raft full actually and there
was no choice when the group were a little overenthusiastic
in a trick to tip the raft on its end.

A great meal
at the Kenmore Hotel was truly appreciated by everyone
and together with a glass or two of something refreshing
helped to warm us all up!
A fantastic
day out and luckily the head count on the return journey
was the same as on the way out with no permanent injuries
received.

Everyone Loves PAM
Leading UK duct manufacturer and airside package
contractor Galloway Group has taken up the value challenge by
introducing a system which will slash the time it takes to construct
a new building.
The UK wide company has engineered ready-to-install
frame units which can hold a building's entire services system,
from fire sprinklers and ductwork to M&E services.
Christened PAM (Pre-Assembled Modules), the units
can be assembled off site while a new project is being built and
then installed at incredible speed the moment the client is ready.
Their first large scale installation has taken place
at a research centre in Harlow, which is being fitted with 168
modules. A 65,000sq ft facility at Saffron Walden has been kitted
out to manufacture the units. Over a mile of multi-services have
been installed on site in a month.
A Galloway representative said: "On a traditional
job, with the services being done one after the other, then tested,
then the probability of attending to defects, it could take over
6 months. And we could only start once the building was ready.
"With PAM we can get the ductwork, heating,
hot water services, cable trays, sprinklers and a lot more in
the units and fully test them while the building's still coming
out of the ground.
"Because of the controlled environment we can
improve efficiency, negate the need for access equipment, reduce
risks, and improve quality, not to mention rationalisation of
supports.
"After installation, it's much easier to carry
out ongoing maintenance because we can pre-plan the units to give
maximum access to each service".
Success at Harlow has led to more future work, with
our involvement being sought on major London projects and Hospitals.
Industry giants including Balfour Beatty and Skanska have also
shown enthusiastic interest.
It was also added: "There are big savings to
be made through PAM. Overall, the method isn't anymore expensive
than going through the traditional route, and the savings come
because the client gets their building finished so much earlier-
and to top quality".
Notes to editors:
PAMs are individual frames 10.8m long by 1.8m wide
and 1.2m deep in which the ductwork, pipework etc. are installed.
Galloway Group is one of the largest manufacturers
and contractors of ventilation ductwork and related products in
the UK. It employs some 400 people across Britain, divided between
factories in Dundee, Dewsbury in Yorkshire and Haverhill in Suffolk.

GALLOWAY GROUP WINS TOP
SAFETY AWARD
Galloway Group has won a prestigious safety award from the British
Safety Council. Only companies with below average accident rates
are eligible.
Galloway
Group is one of only about 1,000 winners from large and small
enterprises all over the country in the public and private sectors.
They faced a tough test in order to satisfy the independent Awards
Panel.
Winners must have lower than average accident rates,
good safety policies and safety plans and commitment to health
and safety at the highest board level. They must detail their
health and safety officers' qualifications and provide details
of significant advances in health and safety for the year.
Mr David Ballard, Director General of the British
Safety Council, says: "The National Safety Awards highlight
organisations that reach top levels of health and safety. They
are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards.
By making safety an important feature of everyday work practice,
Galloway Group is reducing accidents and ill health while improving
productivity and profitability."
Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a message to winners
via his office: "The Prime Minister was pleased to see that
so far 25 traditional industry sectors have now set challenging
health and safety targets in line with the national Revitalising
Health and Safety ones. Mr Blair feels that the efforts and commitment
of the British Safety Council are making a real contribution to
the Revitalising Health and Safety initiative and sends his very
best to all award winners for a successful and enjoyable evening."
Winning companies were presented with their awards
at a banquet in London on 17 May, the biggest event in the safety
calendar. Guests heard a keynote speech from Lord Faulkner, President
of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, and enjoyed
a variety of entertainment.

More and more of Dundee's workforce is benefiting from the free

charge in a bid to upskill people already in employment,"
commented Stuart Dell, head of Corporate Services at Dundee College.
"We are delighted to enter into a partnership
with a leading local company such as the Galloway group.
"A wide range of post-holders within the organisation

ONLY THE BEST WILL DO!
The construction industry has been
notorious in the past for its poor safety record, lack of customer
satisfaction,
poor treatment of sub-contractors, low profits, out of control
costs
. The list goes on. After the production of two damning
reports on the industry the Construction Best Practice Programme
was set up and is funded by the Department of Trade and Industry
to help bring the construction industry up to scratch, an initiative
Galloway Group welcomes and is pleased to be participating in.
Having recently undertaken a CBPP approved Benchmarking
Assessment which measures performance against other businesses
in the construction industry, Galloway Group achieved a rating
of at least "Stronger overall performance" in the following
categories:
Profitability
Financial Management
Productivity
Innovation People
Management Suppliers
Leadership
Policy and Strategy
Processes
Having come through the assessment with what are
believed to be many positive results, there are also a number
of areas that need improving. A system of measuring and monitoring
issues such as "Customer Satisfaction" is now being
considered. This would measure performance on key issues such
as product quality, delivery time, cost and customer service highlighting
both the best and the worst areas. Once these have been identified
steps can be taken to improve poor performing areas and learn
from the best.

SAFETY FIRST
Galloway Group are now members of the British Safety
Council, the highly respected world-wide organisation concerned
with occupational health, safety and environmental issues. We
are currently applying to be considered for a national safety
award because of our improving Health & Safety culture - Watch
This Space !

ACOUSTICS SET FOR LONDON MARKET
The success of Galloway Acoustics has resulted in
the opening of new offices in Richmond, Surrey, ideally situated
for targeting the London market. John Redknap, recently appointed
Southern Sales Manager for Galloway Acoustics believes the growth
of the Acoustics division is likely to continue with the Galloway
Group's commitment to supply quality products on time and at a
competitive price.
Having competent London based representation will
open up new opportunities in the South and allow for further expansion
of the current team.

GALLOWAYS AT CUTTING
EDGE WITH PAM
Over £1m to be installed in just 25 days!
This is no ordinary contract, but the revolutionary new concept
of modular frame building. The contract for GSK's Discovery Research
Automation Facility (DRAF) at Harlow was won in conjunction with
MJN Colston on the also very new e-bidding process via the internet.
The pre-assembled modules (PAMs) are individual
RHS frames 10.8m long by 1.8m wide and 1.2m deep in which the
ductwork, pipework, electrical, medical gas services and sprinklers
are installed. The
complete modules are then connected on site providing the entire
building services system in one efficiently organised unit. This
not only provides considerable savings with regard to site installation
time and costs but also drastically simplifies ongoing maintenance
by ensuring unrestricted access to each service.
The 168 modules required will be made and fitted
out in Galloways dedicated premises at Saffron Walden near Haverhill.
Once the building is ready in May/June the Southern team will
then deliver and install 8 modules a day.
There has already been a great deal of planning
and organising with completed mock up modules already installed
at Saffron Walden and witnessed by MJN, Bovis, GSK and GSK personnel
from America - all very impressed, with much credit going to Chas
Eves and Adrian How.
BRIGHT SPARKS
In the last month Galloway Group's Electrical Division
has won another three NHBC Pride in the Job Awards for excellence
in on-site management. The awards are added to the growing number
of accolades achieved by the division which has, for nearly 30
years, made a significant contribution to the success of the company.
The division has an annual turnover of almost £2.5m generated
from electrical installations in new build housing for clients
such as Wimpey, Betts Homes, Barratt and Redrow. Operating throughout
the Central and Grampian regions of Scotland the division employs
up to 54 electricians including 6 apprentices, and is supported
by the office staff (pictured below) and two site supervisors.
